Get a Refresher Course
During the March 2005 membership meeting, members of Town and Country Kennel Club enjoyed (and benefited from) a refresher course on legislative issues. Our Lecturer for the evening was Ms. Jan Gilmore Loftis.
This year, 53 of Oklahoma's 149 state legislators are new. They are having to learn the in's and out's of Oklahoma's Capitol and the processes of getting bills through the Legislature. At the same time, they are having to get "up to speed" on various legislative issues impacting the state's residents. Jan discussed a number of those issues, such as higher education, foods served in schools, tort reform, workman's compensation......and yes, canine breed specific legislation. Oklahoma is one of several U.S. states beginning to pay attention to certain canine breeds, such as Pit Bull Terriers, with an eye toward breeding prohibitions. For now, Oklahoma's state senators and representatives have been convinced by dog fanciers' lobbying efforts to table the Pit Bull legislation for future review and consideration.
